Acid Reflux and Heartburn Are Closely
Related
Heartburn is a condition that affects millions of people in the
United States. Usually older people suffer from the pain and
discomfort of acid reflux and heartburn. The people who suffer
heartburn have a burning sensation in the area of their heart
or throat. Sometimes this condition can be mistaken for a heart
attack so it can be very frightening. Acid reflux and heartburn
are often very closely connected, but there are other problems
that cause heartburn as well.
Heartburn can be caused by the stress of jobs and other
responsibilities. People end up working hard in situations that
make them feel anxious. These same people often do not eat
properly, and this poor diet causes the pain and discomfort of
heartburn. Other people drink alcoholic beverages which can
cause heartburn, and others drink coffee, tea and sodas with
caffeine that can cause heartburn. Rich, creamy or spicy foods
can also cause heartburn so people will want to adjust their
diets to avoid the pain and discomfort. Heartburn can be caused
by certain foods that have a high acidic content such as
oranges and tomatoes. Acid reflux and heartburn are often the
reason for the pain and discomfort that people feel.
Acid Reflux and Heartburn Is Not Always a Serious
Conditions
Acid reflux and heartburn are closely related in many
circumstances. Acid reflux occurs when the acid in the stomach
backs up into the esophagus. The stomach is very strong and can
tolerate the acid that is present there to help with the
digestion of food. This acid should stay in the stomach, but
that is not always the case. Sometimes the acid backs up into
the esophagus which cannot tolerate the acid. This acid burns
the esophagus, and the person feels the pain. Acid reflux and
heartburn usually happens in older people.
Acid reflux and heartburn could signal the presence of a
serious condition, but usually this condition can be corrected.
If it is not corrected, it could cause serious damage to the
esophagus. The person with this type of problem should consult
with a physician if they have this problem more than twice in
one week. These people will be able to find relief for this
problem unless there is a very serious problem. The person with
acid reflux and heartburn can take medicines that will
alleviate this condition. These people can also adjust their
diets to avoid foods that might cause acid reflux and
heartburn.
